When is machine vision lighting beneficial?

Machine vision lighting is used in a variety of applications including robotics and automation, surface inspection and Barcode Reading. It optimizes your industrial camera set-up by adding benefits such as uniform illumination, contrast enhancement and shadows reduction. Furthermore, having two bar lights allows you to choose the desired direction of illumination by placing them at a specific angle.

Two machine vision bar lights

Besides creating uniform illumination on your object, two bar lights can be used for multiple purposes such as:

  • Back Light: Each bar light has an emitting area of 290x30mm. This area can also be used as a back light. Placing the light behind the object, illuminates the edge evenly. It is often used for part orientation or defect detection.
  • Front Light: Two bar lights offer a great solution when illuminating one or more objects from the front. The uniform light from the bar lights is beneficial for applications such as surface inspection and colour sorting.
  • Ring light: To create illumination similar to the ring light, (preferably) four bar lights should be positioned in a ‘circular’ arrangement around the machine vision camera set-up. It is also called a ‘quadrant lighting’ set-up. For imaging and inspection purposes in machine vision, the goal is shadow-free and uniform lighting.
  • Darkfield light: When using four bar lights (preferably), a darkfield lighting effect can be created for your application. Be sure to position the four bar lights in their specific angles. When an object is lit from an oblique angle, its surface irregularities scatter light, making it appear bright against a dark background. This is known as darkfield lighting.

Two machine vision bar lights can be utilized in addition to these basic machine vision lighting methods to solve complex lighting issues. For instance, they can be utilized to produce a "light tunnel" effect that draws attention to an object's texture. Moreover, they can be used to produce a "strobing" effect, which is useful when freezing motion is required. Depending on type of light, the light angle and the separation between the lights and the object, specific effects can be achieved with two machine vision bar lights.
