What is an industrial USB2 camera?

USB2 is the most price competitive interface for industrial machine vision cameras. The bandwidth is 40 megabytes per seconds. Therefore, do the cameras have a low frame rate. The maximum cable length of a USB2 camera is 4.5 meters. The big benefit of USB2 is that almost every computer has a USB2 port, whereby the USB camera can very easily send image data to various computer systems. These cameras are ideal for bioscience, medical applications, Internet of Things (IoT), laboratory measurements, microscopes and many more applications.

What is the difference between an industrial USB camera and a webcam?

A consumer USB camera, often named a webcam, is meant to capture images which are optimized for the human eye. Also, these images are often compressed. Due to these features of the webcam a precise measurement with an image processing program is often not possible. Daheng Imaging’s industrial USB2.0 cameras provide RAW image information to the computer. This RAW image information is ideal for image processing. Also, with our industrial cameras, it is possible to determine the exact moment of capturing your image down to microseconds. This is possible because our USB camera has a hardware trigger option. This feature of an industrial USB cameras is not possible with webcams. The last major difference between a webcam and an industrial USB camera is that every industrial USB camera model of Daheng Imaging is available for at least 7 years. While some webcam models are not available anymore only after 6 months.

What are the features of an industrial USB2.0 camera?

The features of this camera are:
-    They are cheaper than USB2 or GigE cameras
-    USB2 cables are cheap and have a maximum cable length of 4.5 meters
-    Almost every computer has a USB2 port, you also do not need a frame grabber
-    Both the data communication and power supply for the USB camera are being supplied by the same USB2 cable
-    The bandwidth is 40megabytes/second. Hereby can a 1.3 Megapixel camera capture maximum 25 images per second
-    The camera is available with a version with a digital I/O and a version without a digital I/O (“-L”)
-    It is easy to integrate in all image processing applications

Buying a USB3 or USB2 camera?

There are few factors to consider, in order to decide if need a USB3 or USB2 camera. We name the most important below.

Price

If price is the most important factor when choosing an industrial USB camera and USB2.0 complies with your minimal requirements, then a USB2.0 camera of Daheng Imaging is the best choice. If you have a bigger budget, then we advise to select a USB3 camera. The reason therefor is that USB3 cameras are faster in transferring images from the USB camera to the computer. This has to do with the structure of the protocol and the bandwidth of the USB3 interface. The protocol of a USB3 Vision camera is built like the legacy Firewire protocol. The timing of the image transfer is more precise than with USB2 cameras. This results in obtaining the images in the CPU of the Computer faster and more stable.

Product life cycle and drivers

Next to this will USB3 cameras be available for a longer time, because it is a newer technology. The last reason is the available drivers for USB cameras. A USB2.0 camera of Daheng Imaging can only be controlled with the use of Daheng Imaging their SDK. Our USB3 cameras can be controlled using via Directshow, via the SDK of Daheng Imaging or via the standard USB3 vision protocol. This makes our USB3 camera’s compatible with all image processing software packages such as Matlab, Halcon, Adaptive Vision and Labview.

Software Development Kit for USB Camera (SDK)

With the help of our free SDK (download page) you can control Daheng Imaging their USB cameras. Next to that you can capture images and modify the parameters of your USB camera. The SDK contain example programs in the following programming languages: DotNet, C++ and C#. This allows software engineers to integrate our cameras easily in their own software.
